The Portsmouth Head and Neck Cancer Database
I was able to make use of my IT skills by designing and building the Wessex Regional Head & Neck Cancer Database.
This involved the selection of appropriate data to collect, and a systems analysis of how this data was to be collected, synthesised and used. The final product contained in-built reference manuals and internal cross-checks based on the most widely used international coding systems, including: ICD-10, ICDO-2, the TNM classification of malignant disease and the EORTC QOL module for head and neck cancer.
This system was used for quality assurance and research into head and neck cancer in Portsmouth for several years, and a data clerk was employed by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust for whose sole job was collecting and maintaining the data for the database.
During the first four years that the database was in full-time operation, I spent considerable time on the continuing upkeep and modification of the database, and its effectiveness contributed significantly to Portsmouth being awarded Beacon Status for its Head & Neck cancer services.
I was awarded the Chairman’s Award for Excellence for my work on the database.
